  • Look for issues that you are interested in or passionate about. Your persuasive research project should NOT be painful! You get to choose your own topic, and you will be spending a lot of time with it, so CHOOSE wisely!

Step 3: Gathering Sources

You need 10! Make sure they are on topic, which means they support your thesis statement and answer your research questions. Also, make sure they are reliable.

Useful Online Databases:

Ebscohost: Student Research Center (Off-Campus Log In- ID: asl, Password: library)

You do not have to find all of your sources through these databases, but you are not hooked up to a printer in the classroom. This is a convenient way to collect your data as you find it and print resources that you need when you have access to a printer. Popular search engines, such as Google, are also fine ways to gather research provided you understand how to recognize a reliable source. Documentary videos and websites of organizations, such as PETA or the ASPCA, can make powerful sources!


Step 4: Annotated Bibliography

MLA- What's that?

What is an annotated bibliography?
Type this in MLA format. Print it, or submit it electronically through email.

Basically:

  1. Type in 12pt font, double spaced, Times New Roman or Ariel.
  2. Set up your paper to look like the example.
  3. Do a proper MLA citation for each of your sources.
  4. Put these citations in alphabetical order.
  5. Don't forget the hanging indent!
  6. Type a short paragraph (3-6 sentences) of annotations (or notes) beneath each source's citation. These annotations should quickly sum up the source and describe the way you plan to use it in your project.

Step 5: Select Your Mediums

Remember, you must select a project option from each of the three components- persuasive, informational, and creative.

Step 6: Pull It Together

You need a cool repetend!
What's that? Check out these ideas. A repetend is a creative and fun way to bring unity to your project and to help your reader find the central theme.

Organize the whole thing in a portfolio of some kind.
Order:
  1. Title Page
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Preface/Forward/Introduction - What does this project mean to you? Why did you select the topic? How do you want your audience to feel when they read your work?
  4. Component 1: Informational
  5. Component 2: Persuasive
  6. Component 3: Creative
  7. Epilogue/Conclusion: What do you hope your audience has learned through your project? What have you learned?
  8. MLA Works Cited Page- You've already done the citations in the annotated bibliography. Just get rid of the annotations and you have a Works Cited page!


Step 7: Presentation

You have 5-10 minutes to teach the class about your issue. I hope you take the whole ten minutes to capture our interest, grab our hearts, and make us leave the room talking about YOUR TOPIC! Don't just read your stuff; get creative with your presentation and get us involved! Make us do a survey! Pass out flyers! Play some music! Whatever you need to do to get us excited about this topic that you are so passionate about!
